Pitney Bowes were founded in 1920 by Arthur Pitney and Walter Bowes. Arthur Pitney founded the Pitney Postal Machine Company in 1902 providing the first hand cranked postage stamping machine. In 1908, Walter Bowes founded Universal Stamping Machine Company providing a stamp canceling machine. In 1920 both Arthur Pitney and Walter Bowes merged to form Pitney Bowes.

Ever since 1920 Pitney Bowes have continued to grow, making useful acquisitions to expand its business name and providing the world with their wide range of franking machines and mailing solutions. $2.5 billion has been spent on acquisitions since 2000 alone.
