Pitney Bowes was founded in 1920 by Arthur Pitney and Walter Bowes. Arthur Pitney founded the Pitney Postal Machine Company in 1902, providing the first hand-cranked postage stamping machine. In 1908, Walter Bowes founded the Universal Stamping Machine Company, providing a stamp cancelling machine. In 1920 the two merged to form Pitney Bowes.
Ever since 1920, Pitney Bowes have continued to grow, making acquisitions to expand the business and providing a wide range of franking machines and mailing solutions. More than $2.5 billion has been spent on acquisitions since 2000 alone.
