Using a franking machine is straightforward: weigh your item on the built-in scale, select its size and postal service, let the machine calculate the exact postage, then feed the envelope or label through to print the frank. Each machine has its own manual, but the basic process is the same across modern models.

Before you start
One of the benefits of a franking machine is that everything is in one place, which makes mailing much easier. Before you begin, sort your mail into piles by service and by destination (domestic and international). Focusing on one service at a time is quicker than switching constantly between types.
1. Weigh your item
Place your item on the franking machine’s built-in weighing scale to get the accurate postage. Most modern machines include a scale; many older models did not.
2. Select size and service
Select the size (width x height x depth) of your item and the exact service you want to use, such as 1st or 2nd class. Keep international and domestic mail in separate piles so they don’t get muddled.
3. Let the machine calculate postage
The machine automatically calculates your postage, applying any discounted rates. Mailmark franking currently offers the best discounted rates available. For the current figures, see the Royal Mail franking postage rates.
4. Print the frank
Feed your envelope or franking label through the printer slot. It’s franked with the exact postage, the date, your company logo or message, and the Mailmark barcode (if applicable). Your mail item is then ready to send.
Depending on the machine, extra features may include a time stamp and PIN access control to restrict who can use it.
