What To Do If You’ve Franked Too Little Or Too Much Postage

When using a franking machine to frank and send your mail, it is very easy to occasionally make a franking error or mistake. One such common error is franking too little postage or too much postage. The first thing to do if you make this error is not to panic as, with almost any franking error or mistake, it can be easily resolved.

Read on below to see what you should do if you make this mistake with either a Mailmark or standard franking machine. If you are unsure what type of franking machine you have, please contact your franking machine supplier.

If you have a Mailmark franking machine and didn’t pay enough:

1. Using a black ball point pen, boldly cross through the 2D barcode of the Royal Mail Mailmark® franking impression (careful not to cross through the price you paid).

2. Then write your initials (the first letter of your first and last names).

3. Next re-frank the envelope again either:
– On the bottom left-hand corner or shorter edge of the envelope or;
– If using a franking machine label, place on the envelope to the left of the original franking impression.

If you have a Standard franking machine and didn’t pay enough:

1. Simply re-frank the envelope with the correct date either:
– On the bottom left-hand corner or shorter edge of the envelope or;
– If using a franking machine label, place on the envelope to the left of the original franking impression.

If you have a Mailmark or Standard franking machine and paid too much:

1. Firstly make sure you do not send or post the item(s).
2. Remove the contents of the item(s) and start afresh with a new envelope or packaging.
3. Send any unused franked envelopes or packaging (the entire envelope or packaging) to:
Royal Mail Franking
Stone Hill Road
Farnworth
BOLTON
BL4 9XX

PLEASE NOTE: The total claim must be for at least £10.00. All the impressions must be clear and readable and made within six months of the franked date.

PLEASE NOTE: You will get a cheque refund for the value of the unused impressions minus a 15% administration fee.
