Can you put franked mail in a post box?

July 1, 2019

You can only put franked mail in a standard post box if it is inside a Royal Mail-approved meter posting envelope, which holds up to 30 franked items. For anything that will not fit, use a Business Posting Box, a Mail Centre, or your local Post Office.

Using a standard post box: meter posting envelopes

To use an ordinary post box, place your franked items in a Royal Mail-approved meter posting envelope (sometimes called a low-volume posting envelope) first. One envelope holds up to 30 franked items. At Mailcoms we supply our own range of approved meter posting envelopes.

For larger volumes or bigger items

Anything that will not fit in a meter posting envelope should go via a Business Posting Box, a Royal Mail Mail Centre, a Delivery Office, or your local Post Office. Some parcel postboxes around the UK can also take small parcels.

Where you can post franked mail

  • A standard post box – only inside a meter posting envelope (up to 30 items).
  • A Business Posting Box.
  • A Royal Mail Mail Centre or Delivery Office.
  • Your local Post Office.

High-volume senders can also arrange a Royal Mail business collection, with one-off or regular weekday collections. Stock up on meter posting envelopes or call 01543 572 776.
