A franking machine die number is a unique identifier for your specific franking machine. It prints on every franking impression, just below the postage amount, and it also appears on your Royal Mail franking licence. It is how Royal Mail ties each franked item back to the machine that produced it.

The quickest way to find your die number is to look at any franking impression your machine produces – it is printed just below the postage value. It also appears on the franking licence issued for your machine.

Your die number and your franking licence

Do not use a new franking machine until you have received your franking licence from Royal Mail or your Royal Mail authorised supplier (such as Mailcoms). The licence carries your die number along with:

• Your company name and address.
• The machine’s serial number.
• The address where the machine will be used.
• The name and model of the machine.

Royal Mail can amend these records at any time and may share them with authorised manufacturers and suppliers to keep everything accurate.
