Would a franking machine benefit your business?

Thinking of switching to a franking machine? There’s lots of reasons why making the switch may be right for your business, so we’re talking about the main benefits of ditching the stamps and why it might be right for you.

Are franking machines worth it?

One of the main benefits of using a franking machine is that it makes postage calculations much simpler. As the cost of postage depends on size, weight and class, working this out manually can be time consuming. A franking machine includes an integrated weighing scale and rate wizard, taking away the need to manually work out rates. It also takes away the need to purchase stamps, again saving time. You can also print your company logo, return address or promotional message on your mail, presenting a more professional image to your customers.

Plus, modern machines have the ability to automatically seal letters once they’ve been franked, stack and organise franked mail, apply labels as required and use software to set up cost centres so that you can track spend and report on usage. Overall, we’d say they’re definitely worth it for your business.

Do franking machines save money?

In effort to encourage businesses to use franking machines, Royal Mail offers discounts on postal charges for customers who frank their post. As it currently stands, from 4th April 2022, a stamp for a 1st class letter up to 100g will cost 95p, whereas the standard franking price is 84p and the Mailmark franking prices is 78p. This means up to 17p can be saved over a stamp. You can view all of the 2022 postage rates from Royal Mail here to find out how much you could save using a franking machine.

In addition to this, franked mail is more accurate at calculating postage costs, meaning you won’t ever need to worry about overpaying!

Which franking machine is best?

The franking machine you choose will depend on the volume of mail you’re sending out. Machines can be categorised into three types: Standard Franking Machine, a Smart Meter Franking Machine or a Mailmark Franking Machine.

standard franking machine requires you to refer to a pricing wallchart and for the correct price to be manually inputted into the franking machine. A Smart Meter franking machine will calculate the postage price automatically as long as you select the correct UK or International product to use. A Mailmark franking machine however is far more efficient, with a faster, machine readable, 2D barcode.
